Morrison stays true to the film as he recreates the Beatles adventure with Captain Fred as they take on the Blue Meanies in the hopes of freeing Sgt. It’s well crafted and read well, maintaining the comedy and excitement one would hope for. The novel can’t hope to live up to the movie, because for one, animation has the luxury of more imagery that can’t all fit into a comic and secondly, most important, it can’t play the Beatles music. The lines and coloring are more crisp in the book than the animation and stays relatively consistent. The only way it could have been better would be if the music played when you opened the pages (like the greeting cards that come with sound). I'd say the one big drawback in going from movie to book format (in reverse from the norm) is that the reader doesn't get to hear the Beatles' songs - 'All Together Now,' 'Nowhere Man,' 'Hey Bulldog' - or hear to the band's witty dialogue (even though it was done by professional voice actors, and not 'the boys') in those warm Liverpudlian tones.īut the book really works in a dual-level, Rocky & Bullwinkle sort of way for a family audience.
